about

Written in response to a poem entitled "Stop" by Steve Almond.

lyrics

And maybe I am the one getting
off the tour bus just then, hungry.
My shorts riding up. Hat misshapen
from jamming it under the seat

since Missouri. I have no sympathy
for waitresses, and aren’t we all sad children
of the dead? What you do with teddy bears
at roadside crosses does not mean
I shouldn’t want a cup of coffee. Not
that I’m rude about it, just hungry
like I said, so please—

a refill (with room for milk)
and hold the side of hometown
wishfulness. That bus is not the do-over
you see it for. Don’t believe me?
Take off the brown smock and buy
yourself a ticket. A few hundred miles
with your cheek against red plaid upholstery
and you’ll see—

It’s just you in a different county.
The smock wasn’t your grief,
the grill wasn’t your loneliness,
the ketchup wasn’t your fear
of not being as special
as the old gray cook said
when he loaned you the fare money—

But it’s too late now.
Behind us smokes the bridge back
to your old tethers and I am about
to tell you why I’m headed to Providence
to take up the diner life and learn
to keep still and like it. So here—

have a Life Saver.
